1. What tools do you use from beginning to end to produce the finish product of your art?
-For a few years I used to use MS Paint and finished off in Adobe Photoshop, then it was from Manga studio to Photoshop. Nowadays I just clip studio to do make a piece of artwork from start to finish.
2. Can you go through the process of drawing your characters on canvas? For example, do you start with drawing a mannequin silhouette? Or do you start with a rough sketch of the character, and correct the line art later on?
-I do both. The mannequin silhouette technique is a little quicker for me.
3.When doing your line art, what brushes do you use, and what are the settings? If you use different brushes, when do you use each during your line art?
-Pencil bushes basically, sometimes pen mapping brushes for ink work.
4. What is your opinion on using references? Do you use them?
-References often saves one the trouble of thinking up drawing complicated poses and shorten the time to make the artwork. In the process, one gets to learn a lot through observation and that is the most important trait an artist must gain in his/her experience.
References are often a common practice in art classes and universities when a model is hired to pose in front of novice students who try to learn the form of the human body in art.
As experienced as I am today, I am still a student and I am still learning from the references. Like a mad scientist, I usually experiment with them and try to apply it in my own way in my artwork. As a result my art style is constantly evolving and it gives me an edge in my work.
5. After completing your line art and color, what is your technique when it comes to shading the character and their muscles?
I often start with shadows as it gives the picture more depth and then blend them with the lighter colors bringing out a 3D effect. Sometimes I dabble around with the shadows bringing out a secondary form of light, enhancing the 3D effect even further. However, one should learn and acquire background knowledge on the perspective of light on any object as it is very very crucial to the technique.
6. How did you learn anatomy, and what things were most helpful?
Yes I did, from a young age. My father used to have a huge collection of regular and historic encyclopedias and huge doctors book of the human anatomy. Naturally the muscles was the most compelling part of the books.
7. What are your views on tracing? Do you see it as cheating or a learning tool?
-For a novice artist it is OK to trace as it is part of the learning process to draw. I used to do that quite at school, especially when I was making plans to build a 3 foot long model pickup truck for a school project, hehe.
As I stand today personally I see it as kinda cheating but then it will all depends on the artist if he/she is able to manipulate it enough to make the artwork look very unique to the audience.
For example, there is a pinup artist in I know by reputation who actually mix and match real muscular limbs, torsos and faces from existing female bodybuilder photos and and he blends them in such a way that they appear to be very unique in execution to make an all new form of photo manipulated FBB art. Now that is what I call improvisation in art.
8. Are there any artists that you admire or would like to shout out?
